FACEBOOK Desktop

Microsoft has released a powerful Facebook desktop client, based on Silverlight 4. Facebook Logo We had already reviewed many Facebook applications for desktop in the past like Fishbowl, Notifications 2 or ISeeYoo. Most of these are mere notification or status update applications for Facebook. But the current Facebook desktop client from Microsoft is way ahead of these applications. The features packed in this desktop client with the simplicity and ease of use, can challenge any Adobe Air based application very easily.

The client is still a developer preview release and is available for download on Windows and Mac.

NOTE: Before you can install this rich facebook client application you need to install SILVERLIGHT in your desktop.
Download SILVERLIGHT first.

What is DYNAMIC WEBSITE?

Most business websites these days are DYNAMIC meaning that the web pages are dynamically built pages that allow user interaction. This is required for example for an online shopping cart.

They are usually built with a programming language such as ASP, PHP or JAVA. This code "creates" the HTML that is displayed in the browser. XHTML and XML are standards which are probably eventually replace HTML. However most sites are still "output" in HTML because this is visible in most browsers.

DYNAMIC SITES are often database-driven. This means that the site content is stored in a database and the dynamic code "pulls" the content from a database.

WPF 4

Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a next-generation presentation system for building Windows client applications with visually stunning user experiences. With WPF, you can create a wide range of both standalone and browser-hosted applications. An example is the Contoso Healthcare Sample Application that is shown in the following figure.

The core of WPF is a resolution-independent and vector-based rendering engine that is built to take advantage of modern graphics hardware. WPF extends the core with a comprehensive set of application-development features that include Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML), controls, data binding, layout, 2-D and 3-D graphics, animation, styles, templates, documents, media, text, and typography. WPF is included in the Microsoft .NET Framework, so you can build applications that incorporate other elements of the .NET Framework class library.
This overview is intended for newcomers and covers the key capabilities and concepts of WPF. Experienced WPF developers seeking a review of WPF may also find this overview useful.

Microsoft Visual C#

Microsoft Visual C# is Microsoft's implementation of the C# specification, included in the Microsoft Visual Studio suite of products. It is based on the ECMA/ISO specification of the C# language, which Microsoft also created. While multiple implementations of the specification exist, Visual C# is by far the one most commonly used. In most contexts, an unqualified reference to "C#" is taken to mean "Visual C#."

The term Visual denotes a brand-name relationship with other Microsoft programming languages such as Visual Basic, Visual FoxPro, Visual G# and Visual C++. All of these products are packaged with a graphical IDE and support rapid application development of Windows-based applications.

Visual C# is currently used in development of Windows and Xbox Live games via Microsoft XNA, which allows game developers to create and share their games with other gamers.

JAVA: Magic Square

In recreational mathematics, a magic square of order n is an arrangement of n2 numbers, usually distinct integers, in a square, such that the n numbers in all rows, all columns, and both diagonals sum to the same constant. A normal magic square contains the integers from 1 to n2. The term "magic square" is also sometimes used to refer to any of various types of word square.

Normal magic squares exist for all orders n ≥ 1 except n = 2, although the case n = 1 is trivial, consisting of a single cell containing the number 1. The smallest nontrivial case, shown below, is of order 3.

Microsoft Silverlight

Microsoft Silverlight is an application framework for writing and running rich Internet applications with emphasis on multimedia, animations, and graphics, with features and purposes similar to those of Adobe Flash. The run-time environment for Silverlight is available as a plug-in for most web browsers. While early versions of Silverlight focused on streaming media, current versions support multimedia, graphics and animation, and give developers support for CLI languages and development tools.

The current version 4 was released in April 2010. It is compatible with multiple web browsers used on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Mobile devices, starting with Windows Phone 7 and Symbian (Series 60) phones, were expected to be supported in 2010. A free software implementation named Moonlight, developed by Novell in cooperation with Microsoft, is available to bring Silverlight versions 1 and 2 functionality to Linux, FreeBSD and other open source platforms. However, because of redistribution and patent concerns, Linux distributors such as Fedora have decided to exclude Moonlight.
